Grown in 2024, on our small lot in Michigan, we grew over 250 plants, with over 100 varieties. We practice safe cutting, separating and storage methods. Dahlias must be lifted in the fall if you're planting zone faces harsh winter temperature fluctuation. We have cold temperatures and dry winter air here, therfore we store the tubers in vermiculite in plastic totes in an area that won't freeze, be too moist, or have temperatures above 60.
Dahlia tubers are planted after the last frost, stake the plants for windy conditions, and plants that reach taller heights. We use green fence posts and string or hortavona trellis. They prefer well draining soil, therefore grow bags, raised beds and hilling can help, especially if you have clay soil.
Remove side buds to encourage longer stems.
We only ship tubers with at least one eye, tubers may be small, maybe even in less than perfect shape as they did come from being in dirt. We ship in the spring, when the temperature allows us, to prevent shipping during freezing temperatures. Please open your package immediately to inspect, please contact us and send photos of the tuber you are concerned about, within the first 48 hours of receiving to allow us a chance to discuss, offer suggestions and make a determinstion. We are not responsible for growers growing or storage issues.
